Justin joined the faculty at the School of Criminal Justice in the fall of 2012. He is the 2015 recipient of the American Society of Criminology’s Ruth Shonle Cavan Young Scholar Award.

Justin is currently involved in several research projects exploring diverse topics. In one project, he is examining the extent, sources, and consequences of policing-related emotions, especially the fear of being mistreated by police officers. In another project, he is testing how to increase the hiring of people with criminal records, focusing specifically on how direct incentives (e.g., tax credits) affect employer decision-making. Justin also is conducting research on public opinion on gun control. In one project, for example, he is exploring whether people are comfortable living near, and interacting with, different types of gun owners.
