Professor Julie Reid is based at the Department of Communication Science at the University of South Africa (UNISA) and specialises in media studies. Her research interests include the topics of media and communications policy and regulation, media diversity, communication rights, delusive speech, and online crime. Julie is an activist for media freedom and communication rights, and former President of the South African Communications Association (SACOMM). She has published widely on the topics of media regulation, media politics and issues of communication rights in South Africa. She is the editor and co-author of the books 'Looking at media: an introduction to visual studies' (Pearson, 2013), 'New concepts in media diversity. A view from South Africa' (Unisa Press, 2020) and the co-author of 'Tell Our Story. Multiplying voices in the news media' (Wits University Press, 2020). Her latest book is entitled 'Delusive Speech in the Sharing Economy. Scam Inc.' (2025) and is published by Routledge.
