Historian who has published extensively in the fields of Southern African mental health, medicine, archives, gender, ethics, emotions and archives. Former President of the Southern African Historical Society and of the National Archives Advisory Council. I have recently published articles on the markets for and regulation of pharmaceuticals (particularly the teratogen thalidomide, and sedatives) in the region between the 1930s and the 1960s. My current research concerns the politics of medical mercy killings and assisted dying in South Africa, 1930s to present.
