Julie Hanlon Rubio

Julie Hanlon Rubio joined the faculty at JST after 19 years in the Department of Theological Studies at St. Louis University where she was Professor of Christian Ethics with a secondary appointment in Women's and Gender Studies. Her research brings the resources of social ethics to issues of family, feminism, and politics. She has published five books and two edited volumes, including Can You Be a Catholic and a Feminist? (Oxford University Press, 2024) and Hope for Common Ground: Mediating the Personal and the Political in a Divided Church (Georgetown University Press, 2016). Her many essays have appeared in Theological Studies, Horizons, the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics, and the Journal of Political Theology. She is a former member of the United Catholic Conference of Bishops' National Review Board and a current board member of the Journal of Moral Theology. She speaks in a wide variety of public forums and writes for popular venues such as America magazine, The Tablet, and National Catholic Reporter. in the fall of 2025, she was a visiting scholar at the University of Central America in El Salvador.
