Julianne K. Viola is a social scientist investigating civic engagement among young people. Her research explores the intersection of youth studies, political engagement, and a contemporary society characterised by technology use.

In addition to her qualitative work in civic and youth studies, Julianne has collaborated with researchers at Harvard University, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the data analytics startup, Panorama Education, to develop scales for rigorous and reliable student perception surveys that are used by 3.2 million students across 380 districts and 4,800 schools. Julianne has also collaborated on the Transmedia Literacy project at the Oxford Internet Institute, and has consulted for The Education Hub, a not-for-profit organisation in New Zealand, where she developed evidence-based resources for teachers.

She holds a BA in Government from Cornell University, EdM in Education Policy and Management from Harvard University, and completed her DPhil in Education at the University of Oxford. Julianne is currently a postdoctoral research associate at Imperial College London's Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship (CHERS).
