Júlia de Freitas Sampaio

I am currently a Postdoctoral Research fellow at the University of Zurich working at the intersection of climate change, migration, disaster risk reduction, and inequality. My research explores how extreme weather events and environmental degradation reshape everyday life for displaced and marginalized communities, especially how governance choices can increase structural inequalities.

A central focus of my work is WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene), particularly in emergency and post-disaster settings. I examine how extreme weather events disrupt access to safe water, sanitation infrastructure, and access to basic public health services. I am especially interested in how these disruptions are gendered and racialized, affecting vulnerable groups in distinct ways.

Beyond those topics, I also engage with questions of extractivism, land inequality, food systems, and decolonial alternatives, including agroecology and grassroots land reform movements in Brazil. My work connects environmental crises and disasters to long-standing colonial and socio-economic structures that shape who is exposed to risk and who has access to protection.

Across all my projects, I use mixed methods and decolonial approaches with a focus on lived experiences, and a strong commitment to social justice
