I practised as a dentist for 30 years, then after part-time study for MSc and PhD, taught for 5 years as a lecturer in biological anthropology. Known as the "Bradford Tooth Fairy" my research has focused on using measurements of the stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen from tooth dentine to reconstruct diet and nutritional stress during childhood and adolescence from archaeological individuals. A recent focus has been comparing breastfeeding histories to the isotope data from modern primary teeth, and reflecting that knowledge back to the data from past populations.
