Judith Valerie Engel

Judith Valerie Engel is an Austrian musicologist, concert pianist, and feminist scholar. She completed her PhD in Historical Musicology at the University of Oxford in 2025. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at the University of British Columbia, funded by the Infrastructure and Integration Lab in the Department of Sociology.

Her research at UBC focuses on contemporary Canadian women composers. Her Oxford thesis examines the composer and performer Marianna Martines (1744–1812), a prominent figure in 18th-century Vienna. Bridging feminist scholarship, music history, and embodiment, Engel's work is situated at the interdisciplinary intersection of musicology, sociology, and performance.

Research interests: women composers, intersectional identities, gender and feminist studies, performance and embodiment, sociology of art.
