Juan Masullo

Juan Masullo is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Political Science, Leiden University and the Department of Social and Political Sciences, University of Milan. In 2025, he was selected as part of the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation Distinguished Scholars.

His research integrates different methods and forms of evidence, often incorporating extensive fieldwork, to examine the causes, dynamics and consequences of political and criminal violence. He is particularly interested in how experiences with violence influence people's political preferences and democratic attitudes. He has investigated these issues in different countries affected by civil war and organised crime, including Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Ecuador, and Italy.
