Dr Nagoli holds a PhD in Urban and Rural Development (Anthropology) obtained from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), and an international development MSc in Agriculture, Environment and Development from the University of East Anglia.

He has over 20 years of research experience with over 50 publications largely focused on: political ecology, food systems; natural resources governance; the blue economy (aquaculture and fisheries) in East and Central Africa, as well as Asia. Joseph has also worked as Director of Knowledge and Learning and Acting Director General of the Malawi National Planning Commission where among many achievements, he spearheaded evidence generation and drafting of the Malawi 2063 (MW2063) and its first operationalization plan, the MW2063 First 10-Year Implementation Plan.
