Jonas Hinnfors is a Swedish political scientist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Gothenburg's Department of Political Science, specializing in social democracy, party behavior, ideology, migration policy, and the welfare state.

He earned his PhD in political science from the University of Gothenburg in 1992 and advanced to docent status in 1996, later becoming full professor in 2006.[2] Hinnfors has held visiting positions at institutions such as the University of Stirling—where he serves as Honorary Senior Research Fellow since 2015—and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris.[1][2] His research empirically traces the historical stability of social democratic parties in Sweden and Britain, as detailed in his 2006 book Reinterpreting Social Democracy: A History of Stability in the British Labour Party and Swedish Social Democratic Party, while also analyzing contemporary pragmatic adaptations, including shifts toward restrictive immigration stances amid welfare state pressures.[2] Hinnfors has secured substantial grants for projects on Nordic migration policies, ideological polarization, and intra-EU migration, supervised 16 doctoral students, and contributed to peer-reviewed journals through special issues on party responses to migration challenges.

In professional leadership, he chaired the Swedish Political Science Association from 2011 to 2013 and served on the board of the Nordic Political Science Association from 2012 to 2014, while evaluating research and education for agencies in Sweden, Denmark, and Estonia.[2] His co-authored works, such as Party Realignment in Western Europe (2022) and analyses of Swedish political agreements like the January Agreement, underscore empirical drivers of party change amid electoral and global constraints, emphasizing causal factors like voter realignments over ideological dogma.
