I am a human geographer who has conducted research in the medical humanities and science and technology studies (STS). My major areas of research are in-custody death in U.S. prisons and jails; the historical development of weapons technologies; and so-called "popular economy" activities among people excluded from formal employment, especially in Nicaragua. In addition to my academic work, I am also an experienced journalist, with a background in magazine features and local news reporting. I have received awards and grants from the American Association of Geographers (AAG), the History of Human Sciences (HHS) journal, and the Fund for Investigative Journalism (FIJ). I am at work on a book about the history of "less-than-lethal" police weapons, especially pepper spray and Tasers.
