John is an Associate Professor in performance and innovation at the University of Limerick, where he supervises Professional Doctorate and PhD candidates working within professional multi-disciplinary performance environments pursuing practice-based post-graduate qualifications.

He also conducts research on human performance, including: the detrimental effects of fatigue on running coordination; the modernizing of periodization planning paradigms; stress as it relates to performance and health; genetics and sports performance; and the link between fitness, movement, cognition and emotional health

His professional experiences include working as a coaching practitioner at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the 2015 Rugby World Cup, the 2008 Olympics and the 2004 Paralympics as well as both junior and senior IAAF World Athletics championships. He has also worked with a number of Olympic and world championship medallists in a variety of sports including, for example, Phillips Idowu, triple-jump, world silver (2011), European gold (2010), world gold (2009), Olympic silver (2008); Germaine Mason, high jump, Olympic silver (2008) and Laura Massaro, squash world champion (2013).
