John Coggon is Professor of Law in the Centre for Health, Law, and Society, in the University of Bristol Law School. His research focuses in particular on public health ethics and law, and mental capacity law. He is programme director of the LLM in Health, Law, and Society.
Professor Coggon’s academic publications include his monograph "What Makes Health Public?" (Cambridge University Press, 2012) and the textbook "Public Health Law: Ethics, Governance, and Regulation" (Routledge, 2017), co-authored with Professor Keith Syrett (Bristol) and Dr A.M. Viens (York). He has published articles in leading law, ethics, and medical journals, contributed chapters to major edited collections, and has been co-editor of five books.
Beyond his academic publications, Professor Coggon has been commissioned to publish reports for Public Health England and the UK Faculty of Public Health, of which he is an Honorary Member. His committee experience includes his position as a member of the British Medical Journal's ethics committee, and as a founding member of Faculty of Public Health's ethics committee. He is also a member of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.
