Dr. Job Mwaura is a Research Associatete at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich, where he works on the European Research Council-funded project. He is also an Affiliate Faculty member at the Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Studies, George Mason University, and an Adjunct Research Fellow at Strathmore University in Kenya. He previously held research positions at the Wits Centre for Journalism, the Institute for Humanities in Africa (HUMA) at the University of Cape Town, and Stellenbosch University.
Dr. Mwaura’s research focuses on digital media in Africa, AI ethics, platform governance, and social justice. He holds a PhD in Media Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand and an MSc in Communication and Journalism from Moi University. His scholarly work includes peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and public policy briefs. He is a recipient of several competitive research fellowships, including the SSRC’s African Peacebuilding Network Fellowship, the Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa Fellowship, the Scholars at Risk Fellowship at New York University, and the Africa No Filter–Meta Immersive Tech Fellowship.
He currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) and is affiliated with the African Studies Centre at Leiden University and the Center for Critical Race and Digital Studies (CR+DS) at New York University. Dr. Mwaura is widely recognized for his interdisciplinary scholarship and leadership in shaping critical conversations on media, technology, and power in African contexts.
