- Professor, Chronic Disease and Ageing, Monash University
Professor Joanne Ryan heads the Biological Neuropsychiatry and Dementia research unit in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (SPHPM).
Joanne is a neuropsychiatric epidemiologist, with training in molecular biology and biostatistics. She is co-Principal Investigator on the ASPREE-XT study of ageing, and CIA of the STAREE-Mind Clinical Trial substudy, investigating the effects of statins on cognitive ageing and brain health. She co-leads an International Consortium on interventions to promote health aging and works with NGOs internationally.
Joanne's research is focused on identifying risk factors and preventative interventions for dementia, cognitive decline and frailty, and investigating factors which can promote resilience to cognitive and physical decline with aging. She also has a strong interest in the role of stress and trauma in neuropsychiatric disorders across the lifecourse, including understanding the biological underpinnings of these disorders, as well as the use of biomarkers for early identification and risk stratification. Her long-term vision is to reduce the prevalence and burden of neuropsychiatric disorders across the life-course.
