Having taught and published in the United States for a number of years, Joan moved to the UK, and have been at the University of Southampton since 2016. Her teaching and research interests include Public Law, Family Law, and Legal History. In addition, Joan supervises dissertations, serves as a personal academic tutor to a group of students, and she is currently the Programe Lead for the JD (Juris Doctor) and Accelerated Students.

Current research
Joan recently published a book, MI5, the Cold War and the Rule of Law, with KD Ewing and Andrew Moretta. The authors are now working on a second book that will be an overview of civil liberties restrictions during the Cold War. In addition, Joan is currently working on a project dealing with concepts of parenting and parenthood in the UK and the US.
