- ARC DECRA Fellow in Archaeology, La Trobe University
Jillian Garvey is an ARC DECRA Fellow in the Department of Archaeology and History at La Trobe University. Jillian's main research focus is 'zooarchaeology' - the role of animals in Australian archaeology. She has been involved in a variety of research projects on late Quaternary Australia including: southwest Tasmania; Lake Mungo, NSW; Cuddie Springs, NSW; and Lancefield, VIC; and has also worked on faunal assemblages from the Middle Palaeolithic of China.
Jillian has integrated her zoological background into her research on modern Australian vertebrates and invertebrates by conducting various experiments including: fatty acid nutritional analyses; economic utility or anatomy experiments; and butchery and cooking experiments. These modern experiments are combined with the ethnographic record to help understand the archaeological record.
Jillian also has extensive teaching experience having lectured in a variety of archaeology and biology subjects since 1999. With a PhD in vertebrate palaeontology she is also interested in studying natural faunal assemblages, and what this can infer about palaeoenvironments and palaeoecology.
