Jill McCorkel, Ph.D., is Professor of Sociology and Criminology at Villanova University and the founding director of the Philadelphia Justice Project for Women and Girls. She is also a lecturer in the School of Law and Criminology at Maynooth University (Ireland). Dr. McCorkel is the author of numerous peer-reviewed articles and chapters on prisons and punishment, drug policy, and American criminal law. Her critically acclaimed book, Breaking Women: Gender, Race, and the New Politics of Imprisonment (New York University Press), is the only behind-the-walls ethnographic study of an American women's prison during the height of the drug war.
