Professor Mennis has expertise is Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Science (GISci) and its application to health and environment, with a focus on issues of environmental justice, mental health, and substance use. He has published over 100 journal articles and his research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), and National Institute of Justice (NIJ). He has served as President of the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS), Chair of the Geographic Information Science and Systems (GISS) Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers (AAG), and Board Director for the GIS Certification Institute (GISCI). Editorial responsibilities include serving as Associate Editor of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) journal Preventing Chronic Disease and on the Editorial Boards of the Annals of the Association of American Geographers and International Journal of Geographical Information Science, among other journals. Dr. Mennis received a doctorate in Geography from Pennsylvania State University and is a certified GIS Professional.
