Dr Hapeta is an Associate Professor in Māori Physical Education and Hauora at the University of Canterbury. Previously, he was a Senior Lecturer at University of Otago and before that spent almost 15 years working at Massey University including a 2-year secondment to the Office of Research and Enterprise as their Research Development Advisor – Māori. Prior to his Academic career, he was a fully registered classroom teacher in Primary, Intermediate and Secondary (High) schools in NZ as well as also teaching in Japan and Italy. He also played NPC-level rugby in NZ and professionally in Japan and France. He also coached rugby in Biella, Italy and has coached both Club and representative level rugby in NZ. His research interests include: Kaupapa Māori methodology, Indigenous research, Sport for Development; Team Culture; and Games Sense pedagogy. He currently serves on various Boards, including the Board of Trustees at his two daughters' College and Sport Manawatū (Regional Sports Trust). In the past he has been on Academic Reference groups for Sport New Zealand, the Ministry of Education's Subject Expert Group for Physical Education and was on NZ Rugby's Working Group for their Community Rugby Training, Education and Development (TED) framework. Presently, he works and lives in Christchurch with his family.
