- Senior Lecturer, Communication at Deakin University Australia., Deakin University
I am a Senior Lecturer in Communication (Journalism) at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia. I have worked for more than 25 years as a journalist in print, radio and online and I am a past winner of the United Nations Association of Australia Media Peace Prize for a radio documentary on East Timor.
I joined the Academy in 2018 and my PhD included a study of Walkley Award winning feature articles.
My book, “Emotions and Virtues in Feature Writing: The Alchemy of Creating Prize-Winning Stories” (Palgrave 2021) built on my PhD research and introduces a new theoretical framework, the “Virtue Paradigm”, and a new textual analysis tool, the “Virtue Map”, to show how journalists employ narrative and reporting devices to communicate emotions and virtues to readers.
In 2018 and 2019 I was part of a Deakin team that worked with the Walkley Foundation on developing a pilot for the planned Walkley Digital Archive.
My research interests include the study of emotion and virtues in the media, the role of women in the media and the history of journalism and journalism excellence in Australia.
