I am a geologist with a specialism in volcanology, beginning by studying volcanic rocks to understand the processes that drive eruptions. However my experiences working during the eruption on Montserrat and elsewhere sparked a keen interest in volcanic risk reduction and the interdisciplinary approach needed in this field. I now go beyond the usual realms of geology and collaborate with sedimentologists, atmospheric scientists, geophysicists, social scientists and scholars of the humanities on a variety of different problems relating to volcanic phenomena, their impacts, and forging new ways to cope with them when they erupt.
