Brubaker is an Associate Professor and a founding faculty member of the Department of Information Science at the University of Colorado Boulder. His research explores how identity is designed, represented, and experienced in socio-technical systems, with a focus on digital identity, social media, and human-centered computing. Brubaker directs both the Identity Lab and the Digital Legacy Clinic at CU Boulder.

Brubaker’s work has significantly influenced how technology platforms address end-of-life digital matters. His research directly informed the development of Facebook’s Legacy Contact feature, enabling users to designate someone to manage their account after death. In 2024, he founded the Digital Legacy Clinic, the nation’s first pro bono service assisting individuals in managing digital legacies, such as social media accounts and online data, after death.
