Jean-Michel Johnston is a College Lecturer in Modern European History at Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge. Before moving to Cambridge, he was a Postdoctoral Researcher on the 'Diseases of Modern Life' project, based at the University of Oxford and funded by the European Research Council. He obtained a D.Phil. in history from the University of Oxford in 2017. His research focuses on the origins and development of telecommunications networks across nineteenth-century Europe. He is particularly interested in the impact of the electric telegraph upon European society after 1850, the national and transnational communities which the technology created, and its influence upon experiences of time and space.
