Dr Jayne Knight is Senior Lecturer in Classics and Assistant Dean, Distinctiveness and Innovation in the College of Arts, Law, and Education. She researches Roman cultural history, Latin literature, and ancient emotions and teaches broadly within the Classics program. As an Assistant Dean on the CALE Learning and Teaching team, Jayne leads strategic projects focused on improving student experiences and teaching quality. Her teaching has been recognised by three Teaching Merit Certificates, and in 2019 she was awarded a Vice-Chancellor’s Team Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning with her colleagues in Classics. In 2022 she was the inaugural recipient of the CALE Student Focus award for making transformative contributions to her discipline, School, and College through her commitment to continuous improvement, and a student-centred, collaborative approach to learning and teaching.
Jayne completed her Bachelor and Master of Arts at the University of Florida (USA). She gained her PhD from the University of British Columbia (Canada) in 2015. Following her doctorate, Jayne taught Latin, ancient Greek, etymology, and Roman history at the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia. She joined the University of Tasmania in June 2016.
Jayne is an experienced major and program coordinator, having coordinated the Classics major in the BA since 2016 and the Humanities Honours program from 2021-2022. As Assistant Dean, Distinctiveness and Innovation, Jayne employs a collaborative, relational approach to academic leadership across a range of strategic learning and teaching projects in CALE.
