- Professor, Department of Forest Resources Management, University of British Columbia
Janette Bulkan is a Professor in the Department of Forest Resources Management. and Associate Dean of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Stewardship, University of British Columbia. I am interested in new forms of enclosures, both de jure and de facto, often mediated by the power of the State and its allies. Those enclosures are increasingly not about territory, but about proprietary access to hydrocarbons, timber, and minerals, and associated intangible products and services, that are often incorporated into complex anastomosing supply chains. I am a Director of the Oil and Gas Governance Network (OGGN); https://www.oggn.org/about/. I am also a member of the Governing Council of the Commonwealth Forestry Association, and the Advisory Board of the GREEN Institute, University of Guyana. I am the Coordinator of the International Union of Forest Research Organisations (IUFRO) Working Party 9.03.07 on Indigenous Peoples and Forest Landscapes, and a member of IUFRO Task Force T48 on Gender, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Forest-related sectors. I work collaboratively on green extractivism, community forestry and independent third-party forest certification systems. I served as a member of the Policy and Standards Committee of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) from 2013-2020.
