After earning my Ph.D. in biological oceanography where I began studying high-temperature microbes from deep-sea hydrothermal vents, I conducted post-doctoral research in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Georgia where I studied the physiology of high-temperature microbes. I combined my interests in field studies and laboratory work and began studying high-temperature microbes in Microbiology at UMass Amherst in 2003.
