My primary area of research is the writings of Hans Christian Andersen. In particular his fairy tales and stories, but I have also worked with his novels, travelogues and poetry. My focus is particularly on Andersen's genre awareness in relation to the folk tale, the art fairy tale and adjacent genres such as the fantastic tale and the short story, as well as on his distinctive narrative style. In this connection, I have focused on both his starting point in Romanticism, especially in relation to the romantic, arabesque poetics, and on the way in which he meets modernity. I am affiliated with the Hans Christian Andersen Center and thereby part of the international network surrounding the center. I am also an expert in the writings of Søren Kierkegaard, with particular reference to his irony, his understanding of anxiety and his perception of language. A third area of research is Karen Blixen and the way in which the modern is expressed in her apparently very traditionally told stories. When it comes to recent Danish literature and art, I have written about authors such as Madame Nielsen, Jan Sonnergaard, Pia Tafdrup, Theis Ørntoft and Nanna-Storr-Hansen and about a number of Lars von Trier's films. My theoretical fields of interest are primarily narratology, the uncanny and the fantastic, psychoanalysis, deconstruction and ecocriticism.
