  • Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Paleoceanography, UCL

Dr. Jack Wharton is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Paleoceanography at University College London (UCL). He completed his PhD in 2023 at UCL under the supervision of Professor David Thornalley, titled The Thermal Structure of the Northwest Atlantic during the Quaternary. He also completed his undergraduate degree in Physical Geography at UCL.

Jack’s research focuses on reconstructing past ocean circulation over the last 25,000 years using paleoceanographic proxies, including stable isotopes and trace metal compositions measured in foraminifera preserved in marine sediments.

As part of his postdoctoral research, Jack contributes to two major initiatives. He is a member of EPOC (Explaining and Predicting the Ocean Conveyor), an international, multi-institutional project redefining our understanding of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). He is also a researcher with VERIFY, part of the UK government’s Forecasting Tipping Points programme, which aims to develop an early warning system for detecting tipping behaviour in the Subpolar Gyre and the Greenland Ice Sheet.
