Ilyas Saliba

I am a researcher fellow at the WZB Berlin and the Global Public Policy institute. Further, I am a PhD candidate in political science at the Humboldt University Berlin.

My research lies at the intersection of comparative politics, international relations and regional studies on Middle Eastern politics & societies. I focus on authoritarianism, democratization, fieldwork safety and measuring academic freedom. In my dissertation I explore the impact of protests on elite perceptions and decision-making in authoritarian regimes in Morocco and Egypt during 2011.

In 2019 I joined the Global Public Policy institutes' team working on topics realted to Human Rights and Democracy focusing on measuring Academic Freedom and developing science-based democracy promotion strategies.

From 2018 till 2019 I worked at Amnesty Internationals' German chapter at the Middle East Desk as a Human Rights advocacy officer in the Berlin office.
