Idris Mohammed

Idris Mohammed is a conflict researcher, academic, and journalist from Northern Nigeria. He is currently a Ph.D. student at the College of Communication and Information Science, University of Alabama- United States.
Idris is a member Conflict Research Network of West Africa and also a member of the United States Institute of Peace Nigerian Network of Facilitators (USIP-NNF).

I have actively contributed to numerous high-impact projects in conflict analysis, resolution, and peacebuilding. My expertise spans studying the effects of armed conflicts on civilians, engaging local communities in peace initiatives, and assessing conflict mediation strategies. I have conducted fieldwork across 15 states in Nigeria, collaborating with diverse stakeholders such as security officials, traditional leaders, bandits, ex-Boko Haram combatants, and vigilante groups.

My work includes documenting human rights abuses with Human Rights Watch, exploring violent extremist narratives in Niger Republic with ISS Pretoria, and mapping displaced populations in Niger Republic. I have led research for USIP on identity-based conflict and governance in northwest Nigeria and analyzed the impact of informal security structures on farmer-herder relations for the International Crisis Group.

Additionally, I have significant experience in election observation and governance, including serving as a program officer for YIAGA Africa’s Watching the Vote project, leading security-focused election monitoring for CDD West Africa, and coordinating peacebuilding initiatives in northeast Nigeria’s reintegration programs.
