Ian Thornhill completed a BSc in Environmental Management at the University of Manchester before an MSc in Pollution and Environmental Control and a PhD in water quality, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in wetlands at the University of Birmingham. He has previously worked as an environmental consultant in the northwest, ecology advisor in local government as well as working in the charitable sector with a focus on citizen science and corporate engagement. Consequently Ian has multiple research foci, from freshwater ecology and the environmental influences upon biodiversity, citizen science and participatory methods, and most recently soundscapes and bioacoustics, all with a view to recovering and conserving nature and increases people's connection to it. To this end he is currently Co-Programme Director of the MSc in Nature Recovery, Restoration and Rewilding and a Senior Lecturer in Planning and Environmental Management at the University of Manchester.
