- Senior Lecturer, School of Natural Sciences, Macquarie University
Dr Ian Jamie is a chemist and science educator with over 40 years of experience in tertiary teaching and research. He holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Queensland (1989) and held postdoctoral positions at the Australian National University's Research School of Chemistry, the Australian Defence Force Academy (UNSW Canberra), the University of Wollongong, and the University of Sydney before joining Macquarie University in 2000.
Ian's research interests span environmental chemistry, gas phase and atmospheric chemistry, and chemistry education. His work has addressed greenhouse gas fluxes at the atmosphere–soil interface, greenhouse gas emissions from livestock, the formation and characterisation of secondary organic aerosols, and volatile organic compound emissions from plants and animals. His current research focuses on developing new attractant compounds for population monitoring and control of insects, and investigating the pheromone profiles of these species.
Ian is a committed science educator and advocate for widening participation in science. He was a founding member of the Advancing Science by Enhancing Laboratory Learning (ASELL) project and has contributed to the development of Chemistry Threshold Learning Outcomes. He is a Director of the National Indigenous Science Education Program (NISEP), which works with low socioeconomic communities to change young people's attitudes towards, and aspirations for, science and technology-based education and careers.
Ian is a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) and a past Chair of the RACI Chemical Education Division.
He was the recipient of the inaugural Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science (2019). Other awards include the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Pearson Educator of the Year (2009), the Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence (2007), a Carrick (ALTC) Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (2007), and an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Award for Programs that Enhance Learning (2011), and the Australian Financial Review Higher Education Award - Opportunity and Inclusion (2021).
