Hyun Kyong Hannah Chang

(she / her)

I am historian of twentieth-century Korean music.

I obtained a PhD in Musicology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2014. My research focuses on how Koreans have mobilised and re-used foreign music across different genres, including art, religious, vernacular and popular, for their own purposes in a century of colonialism, authoritarianism, and globalisation. I am currently working on a book called ‘A Vocal Interior: Korean Hymns in the Age of Empires, 1894-1929.'

My peer-reviewed articles have appeared in flagship journals in the fields of Musicology and Korean Studies, including Journal of the American Musicological Society and The Journal of Korean Studies. From 2021 to 2024, I held an AHRC Research, Engagement and Development Fellowship. At the University of Sheffield, my modules include “History of Korean Popular Music.”
