As a cultural anthropologist, I am deeply involved in and enthralled by researching Islam and Muslim communities in modern South Asia. My research explicates multiple, but complex and interrelated, facets of Muslim lives and cultures. By employing the anthropology and/or sociology of religion approach, my research interrogation revolves around Islamic religious education (madrasa) and identity politics, Islamism and democracy, religion and nationalism, minority Muslims religious practices and religious tolerance etc. These topics tend to converge to a common theme: lived religion i.e., how Muslim experiences Islam in everyday social, cultural, and political contexts and how religion enables them to exercise agency. These themes of research critically analyze the politics in local contexts, discourses and narratives, colonial trajectories, migration history, movement and protest, contested identity, and transnationalism.
My teaching interests include a wide range of areas of subjects in the fields of sociocultural anthropology, sociology, and liberal studies.
