Dr Gupta is a trained physiotherapist, and PhD-qualified mixed-methods applied social and public health researcher and evaluator. Most of his work has been multidisciplinary, multistakeholder, multijurisdictional, and cross-national (India, UK, USA, Australia, and Sweden). Dr Gupta has been awarded about $5 million in research income by government, non-government, and Philanthropic organisations. Dr Gupta has contributed to evidence-based contemporary knowledge to support the health and wellbeing of Australians, primarily in the areas of gambling, AOD, and mental health. Dr Gupta currently works as a Senior Research Fellow at Flinders University. He is based in Melbourne and works remotely.

Dr Gupta has an excellent research track record commensurate with his career stage. Dr Gupta has secured about $5 million in research income both as a Primary Investigator (PI) and Co-PI. The grants have been awarded by government, non-government, and Philanthropic organisations. Dr Gupta’s work has a particular focus on priority population groups: multicultural population groups, First Nations people, and people with lived experience of substance use and mental health. Dr Gupta has used his work to promote capacity building and knowledge translation to inform relevant local, state, and national policies in Australia. Dr Gupta has been engaged in knowledge translation activities in the alcohol and social media research space such as with the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA), Belgium, and NSW Office of Responsible Gambling. Dr Gupta has demonstrated leadership skills by leading teams and delivering projects with autonomy and accountability to a high standard.

In recognition of his research excellence, Dr Gupta has received multiple awards and accolades in Australia and overseas. Dr Gupta has been selected for the outstanding reviewer award for his contributions to the Health Promotion Journal of Australia. This is the highest award presented by the Australian Health Promotion Association to academics as a recognition of their outstanding contributions to the Australian Health Promotion/Public Health research space. The outcomes of his work contributed to him being awarded a 2021 “Excellence in Harm Reduction Award” by the Association of Alcohol and Other Drug Agencies Northern Territory and a 2019 National AOD Award for Excellence and Innovation (Research) by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation. These have all been focused on improving the health outcomes of highly vulnerable populations. In recognition of his research excellence and contribution, Dr Gupta was also nominated for the 2019 Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol & other Drugs (APSAD) Early Career Researcher Award.

Dr Gupta has been awarded honorary academic positions at multiple Australian universities. Dr Gupta has been invited to various Advisory Groups (such as the 2020-2022 Advisory Group for the Review and Dissemination of the Australian Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Assessment and Diagnostic Guide project), committees (such as the NT Department of Health Human Research Ethics Committee), and panels in Australia and overseas.

Dr Gupta has authored 50+ scientific publications in international academic journals, books, and newsletters, with renowned publishers in medicine and public health, including Springer Nature, BMJ Open, BMC Public Health, and Current Psychology. Dr Gupta’s other professional roles include Associate Editor and Associate Editor – Book Review (Health Promotion Journal of Australia), and Editor – Peer Review (International Journal of Public Health) and a reviewer for international journals such as Global Mental Health.
