Dr Helen Simpson is a Lecturer in Criminology, Justice & Social Policy at the University of Wollongong. Her main areas of research include policing practice, technology assisted law enforcement, and domestic and family violence. Prior to that she project-managed Indigenous Recruitment Our Way Delivery (IPROWD) - a NSW Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander police entry course on the South Coast. Before entering academic education, Helen was a journalist who worked in talkback radio and for television. During that period, she wrote magazine articles and two true crime novels including the best-seller Little Girls Lost.
Helen’s PhD considered the efficacy of Domestic Violence Evidence-in-Chief, and her Master thesis looked at the challenges facing police officers when they interview witnesses. She has just completed an evaluation of the colocation of domestic violence support workers into NSW police stations and research into what women want to assist them in navigating technologically based domestic violence and financial abuse. Helen sits on the board of Women Illawarra – the longest serving women’s support group in the region.
