Helen is Professor of Literacy and Psychology in Education at the School of Education, University of Birmingham.

She is a Chartered Psychologist whose research spans Psychology and Education - she explores the skills and processes that underpin literacy and supporting use of evidence-informed practices in literacy education. Recent publications include exploring how and when different cognitive processes are used during reading and spelling, understanding teachers' perspectives on curriculum, and building evidence of what works to support development of reading fluency, comprehension, phonics and spelling.
