Guy Robert Patrick Eyre

I hold a BA in Philosophy, a first MA in Legal and Political Theory from UCL, and a second MA in Near and Middle Eastern Studies (full scholarship) at SOAS. I secured my PhD at the Department of Politics and International Studies from SOAS (full scholarship) in 2021. Since then, I have lectured at King's College London (Politics and Political Economy of the Middle East and North Africa), and have held research fellowships: at the Merian Centre for Advanced Study of the Maghreb (MECAM); Freiburg University (Germany); an ESRC-funded fellowship at Lancaster University's SEPAD institute; a Visiting Fellowship at the Oxford Centre of Islamic Studies; and a Gerda Henkel Foundation-funded Fellowship at the Alwaleed Centre in the University of Edinburgh (where I am currently based).

Centred at the nexus of Politics, Social and Political Theory, Political Anthropology, and Religious/Islamic Studies, my research studies the politics of Islam-oriented movements. Focused on in-depth, comparative studies of North African states, my doctoral work examined the conditions under which puritan global Islamic movements that had long rejected all party, institutional, and oppositional politics as "forbidden" and "impure", undertook a sudden volte face. They began to run for political office, compete in elections, and form political alliances with their long-time ideological betes-noirs.
