• Professor, Director of the Urban Transformations Research Centre, Lang Walker Endowed Chair in Urban Transformation, Western Sydney University

I finished a PhD in urban runoff in 1985 and then went on to do a postdoc at CSIRO in Australia in 1987-1988. I then spent almost 30 years at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. I was first lecturer and then professor in Environmental Engineering, but also worked across the University in creating large research programs in sustainability. I was a key person in building a Living lab at Chalmers known as HSB Living Lab and which is still a flagship project at the University today.. I was also the Chalmers Director for a collaboration between ETH, MIT , University of Tokyo and Chalmers, known as the Alliance for Global Sustainability, from 1999 to 2008, which included developing cross university and industry collaborations in energy pathways and food and water. I joined Curtin University in Perth in 2015 and was a key professor in setting up the RACE for 2030 CRC. I also worked with a developer and 26 industry partners to build a second Living Lab, Legacy Living Lab on an innovation precinct. In 2022 I joined Western Sydney University and have spent the past three years as Co-Director of the Urban Transformation research Centre. I am also the lead on a newly submitted bid for a Cooperative Research Centre on Net Zero Cities.
