- Honorary Professor, Macquarie Law School, Macquarie University
I am an Honorary Professor at Macquarie University (Macquarie Law School) from 1 January 2025. My work concerns inter-relationships between information technology and law: legal information systems and IT law. I was Professor of Law & Information Systems at UNSW until 2024.
During 2025 I will continue research on the global development of data privacy laws, on free access to legal information and the implications of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly on copyright's public domains. I will continue collaborations with colleagues from AustLII and other co-authors.
My most recent books are Public Rights: Copyright's Public Domains (Co-author David Lindsay; Cambridge University Press, June 2018) and Asian Data Privacy Laws: Trade and Human Rights Perspectives (Oxford University Press 2014). Details of previous appointments, awards, grants, consultancies etc are on my background page. See below for my SSRN, Google Scholar, and Bluesky resources.
In 2010 I was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) with the citation: "For service to the law through the development of free electronic access to legal information, and as a leader in the protection of privacy."
