- Assistant professor in Indigenous Governance, École nationale d'administration publique (ENAP)
Giuseppe Amatulli is an Assistant Professor in Indigenous Governance at the University of Québec, ENAP (école nationale d'administration publique). Previously, he was a postdoctoral Fellow at Carleton University (Ottawa), in the Rebuilding First Nations Governance (RFNG) Research Project. The project's main goal was to enhance the capacity building of First Nations who want to transition from the Indian Act to self-governance. Giuseppe has been doing community-based research with and for Doig River First Nation since 2019.
Giuseppe obtained his PhD in Anthropology from Durham University (2023). In the context of his doctoral fieldwork, Giuseppe spent 14 months (June 2019 - August 2020) in Fort St. John, working with the Land Office of the Doig River First Nation while following the development of the litigation BRFN v. BC. The case was about Treaty and Constitutional Rights infringements intertwined with the cumulative effects of Industrial Development. This case study was part of Giuseppe's PhD project, in which he explored how the cumulative effects of industrial development have changed the socio-economic organization of the Doig and Blueberry River First Nations while generating hopes and dreams for the future. At the same time, Giuseppe is also interested in understanding why legal instruments adopted by the government often fail to generate the expected outcomes.
Giuseppe's research methodology, anchored in a strong community-based approach, allows him to perform cutting-edge qualitative research (using various methods such as ethnography, participatory observation, interviews, and discourse analysis) at the intersection of socio-legal and environmental anthropology, intertwined with Human Rights Law, Indigenous Governance, and Public Policy.
