Giorgio Di Gessa is an Associate Professor in Statistics and Population Health and a co-investigator of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). He employs advanced quantitative methods and longitudinal data to investigate the social and demographic factors influencing healthy ageing. His work focuses on how social engagement (including paid work, volunteering, and informal caregiving) relates to mental and physical health in mid and later life. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, he has investigated the impact of COVID-19 and associated viral suppression measures (e.g. furlough scheme and shielding) on mental health, socio-economic outcomes, and access to healthcare, particularly among older people.
