Dr Gilles Van Cutsem is an Honorary Research Associate at the Centre for Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Research, School of Public Health and Family Medicine, University of Cape Town, and a Resident in Neurology at the University of Luxembourg. He worked for twenty years as humanitarian medical doctor, public health expert and epidemiologist for Médecins Sans Frontières in Africa and was leader of MSF's international AIDS Working Group from 2017 to 2021. He has co-authored over 75 scientific publications and holds a Medical Doctor degree from the University of Louvain, Belgium, a Diploma of Tropical Medicine from the Institute for Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium, and a Masters in Public Health and Epidemiology from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He has worked in Africa with MSF since 1998, as a medical doctor, researcher, manager and adviser, mostly on HIV and TB, but also Ebola, cholera, malnutrition, primary care and emergency medicine.
