Gheran Yarraman Steel (Briggs) is a Boonwurrung Traditional Owner with family ties to the Wemba Wemba and Trawalway First Peoples’ communities. At RMIT University, Gheran serves as the Senior Leader for Planning and Transformation within the Policy, Strategy and Impact portfolio, where he leads the university’s transformation of its Indigenous strategy 'Responsible Practice', a model that seeks to embed Indigenous knowledge, self-determination, and cultural integrity across the institution’s operations and community engagement. Beyond his leadership at RMIT, Gheran is the 2025–2026 President of the National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Higher Education Consortium (NATSIHEC), a peak body representing Indigenous interests and advancement in the tertiary sector nationwide. He holds a Juris Doctor from Monash University and an Executive MBA from RMIT University, reflecting his deep expertise in both law, governance and strategic leadership within the higher education landscape. Through these roles, Gheran is recognised as a leading advocate for Indigenous student success, community partnerships, and systemic change across the wider Australian community.
