Dr. Gerald K LeTendre is the Harry L. Batschelet Professor of Educational Administration at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his B.A. (magna cum laude) in sociology from Harvard University and his Master's (sociology) and Ph.D. (education) from Stanford University. Dr. LeTendre has published on a broad range of topics in education, including teacher quality and teacher education. His recent books include a two-volume work on Teachers and the State (Emerald Press, with multiple co-authors) that examines the role teachers have played in nation building around the world. He has also co-edited a book on effective teacher professional development reform (Transforming Teacher Preparation Across Nations (with Lotan and Lit, Teachers College Press). He was elected President of the International Jury for the Hamdan-UNESCO Prize for Teacher Development. In his previous books -- The Routledge Handbook of Teacher Quality and Policy (co-edited with M. Akiba, Routledge); Promoting and Sustaining a Quality Teaching Workforce: Conflict, Convergence and Consensus (co-edited with Alex Wiseman, Emerald) and Improving Teacher Quality: The U.S. Teacher Workforce in Global Context (co-authored with Motoko Akiba, Teachers College Press) -- he and his colleagues examine the critical role that teachers play in national school systems. His current research interests focus on how AI is affecting student-teacher relationships. As part of the Pennsylvania AI Roadshow, he and his colleagues have toured the state listening to teachers and administrators as they grapple with issues of appropriate use of AI in the classroom, concern over screen time and the impact of data centers on rural communities.
