Gareth Barkin is a professor of cultural anthropology and Asian Studies at the University of Puget Sound. His research focuses on the intersections of media, technology, and culture. His early scholarship examined mass media production in Indonesia, investigating how producers navigate religious and social divisions to link national identity with consumption. More recently he has published on short-term study abroad, its assessment, and its intersections with market-based cultural representation. His current research explores AI epistemology and cultural worldviews. Alongside his scholarly work, he serves as the Associate Provost at Puget Sound.
