My research interests lie in the Victorian period, and particularly in Victorian fiction and theatre, women's writing, the figure of the actress, Shakespeare and the Victorians, and Victorian historiography.
I am writing a monograph on the literature and culture of 1859, which aims to write a micro-history of that year, and to use it as a means of exploring our current understanding of the term 'Victorian'.
