Gabriella Penitente

Dr Gabriella Penitente is a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science at Sheffield Hallam University, specialising in biomechanics and applied human performance. Her work sits at the intersection of biomechanics, strength and conditioning, and injury risk, focusing on how movement mechanics translate into real-world performance and lifelong participation in physical activity.

Her research spans both elite sport and health contexts. In sport, she investigates the mechanical determinants of performance in acrobatic disciplines such as gymnastics and diving, including take-off and landing mechanics, motor control, and skill progression. In parallel, her health-focused research examines paediatric gait development and women’s health, particularly post-pregnancy and menopause, where she develops evidence-based lifestyle interventions integrating exercise, recovery, and behavioural change.

Dr Penitente works closely with athletes, coaches, and industry partners to translate scientific evidence into applied practice. She serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Gymnastics Science and, alongside her academic publications, contributes to public engagement and education initiatives, making sport and health science accessible to practitioners and the wider community.
